Languages

Auslan

During 2024, Mount Helena Primary School in collaboration with the School Council and wider school community colletively agreed to implement Auslan as the language to be taught. Learning Auslan broadens students' understanding that each language is an integrated, evolving system for the framing and communication of meaning; and encourages understanding of the role of language as an expression of cultural and personal identity and a shaper of perspectives.

In addtion, learning Auslan increases memory retention and motion processing, stimulates brain development and mental flexibility and increases enjoyment in communicating for both hearing and deaf children.

Auslan is taught by our classroom teachers from Kindy to Year 6, and is integrated into learning experiences to enrich the growth of our students understanding and application.
